The Stifter House – The Centre for the Literature and Language of Upper Austria

The “StifterHaus” is an umbrella concept bringing together the Adalbert Stifter Institute founded in 1950 which offers research facilities in literature and language and the House of Literature, which organizes literary events. Both are accommodated in the former house of Adalbert Stifter (1805-1868).

By tram – nos. 1, 2 & 3 to the Hauptplatz (Main Square)

The StifterHaus: a potted history

1848-1868:	Adalbert Stifter´s residence
1844:	built by the Linzer master builder Johann B. Metz
1844 - 1857:	owned by the coffee shop entrepreneur Joseph Hartll
1857 - 1973:	HQ of the Danubian Steamship Company
Seit 1957:	site of the Adalbert Stifter Institute of the Upper Austrian Province
1988 - 1992:	property of the Upper Austrian Provincial Government.
28. Jänner 1993:	January 1993 Re-opened as the StifterHaus, the Centre for Language and Literature in Upper Austria

Members of the Adalbert Stifter Institute
According to statute, the Institute has the benefit of the work of international literary scholars in its own research activities. These scholars are nominated by the Institute council and confirmed as members of the Institute by the Provincial Government. Scholars become either Ordinary or Extraordinary (corresponding) members.
