An important part of the Institute’s work is devoted to the collection, documenting and archiving of the whole are of applied linguistics and other literature devoted to language in Upper Austria in which dialects have a special place.
The Archive is a mine of written and spoken materials assembled partly on its own initiative and partly from other collections.
The Archive collections contain materials which are closely related to the project to record the dialects in Upper Austria as part of the Language Atlas of Upper Austria (hereafter SAO – Sprachatlas von OÖ), principally the original Fragebücher in the individual areas of research and the voice recordings mainly unstructured conversations in each place. It also covers the original recordings made in the framework of OÖTON, the survey for a “Talking Atlas” available in the Internet and also on CD-Rom.
Further, the Archive has at its disposal written documents and recordings of historical interest and provenance, above all concerning Upper Austria. These are mainly from the holdings of the Phonogramarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
