THE LITERARY MUSEUM – STIFTER’S MEMORIAL CHAMBER

The Literary Museum is to be found in Stifter’s former apartment on the second floor of the StifterHaus. The public are offered an opportunity to gain an overview of the various epochs and the creative writers of those times with the help of a multi-media show. This ranges from the Middle Ages to the modern Period and includes writers from Dietmar von Aist to Thomas Bernhard. Children and young people can take advantage of novel methods of conveying information and in the near future, a re-organization is planned directed to the integration of new and more attractive methods of presenting information.

THE STIFTER MEMORIAL CHAMBER

In May 1848, Stifter left Vienna for Linz intending to spend his summer there. The events of the 1848 revolution prompted him to stay in Linz. He moved into an apartment with his wife Amalia in the street known as the Untere Donaulände where he lived until his death in 1868.
Stifter’s original rented apartment was on the first floor of the house enacted by a local builder, Johann Metz. A few months later the Stifters moved to an apartment on the second floor. After many years of ownership by the Danube Steam Ship company, the house was bought by the Upper Austrian Government in 1973. However the Stifter Institute itself has operated from the house since 1957.

In the early 1990s, after substantial re-building works, the StifterHaus was re-opened as the Centre for Literature and Language in Upper Austria. Today it functions as a House of literature and a Gallery with a wide spectrum of activities ranging from exhibitions to workshops and readings on modern literature and also as a research institute for literature and language with a library, biographical archive and an archive for the works of Upper Austrian authors.

Stifter’s study is now his Memorial Chamber while the other rooms in his former apartment on the second floor have been given over to the Upper Austrian Literary Museum.
